Maths

Subject Intent

The Maths curriculum at Whitehill Community Academy is delivered through timetabled lessons and activity days. When designing the Maths curriculum, the full national curriculum for Maths was taken into consideration, ensuring that pupils are exposed to all of the aims and more, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning .

The Maths curriculum is designed to provide pupils with an understanding of the world around them through seeing how maths is connected to everyday life. Pupils are encouraged to be curious, think critically and develop their problem-solving skills, equipping them with the mathematical skills and knowledge needed to become successful citizens of the world.

Our curriculum enables all pupils to develop an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Through following a well-structured, small step approach, pupils can make connections and appreciate that maths is an interconnected subject. This allows them to build upon strong foundations and to apply their understanding to other curriculum areas.

We use a Teaching for Mastery approach, which offers all pupils the opportunity to access the full maths curriculum, ensures our pupils will build self-confidence, resilience and a strong understanding of mathematics as a universal language thus enabling pupils to understand the world beyond school. The study of mathematics is the foundation of many disciplines, including science, technology and financial literacy, providing pupils with the necessary tools for the next stage of their life.

Golden Threads

To enable our subject leaders to provide a robust approach to the Maths curriculum, knowledge and skills are structured so that each term and year build upon one another. This is done by mapping out the ‘Golden Threads’ of our maths curriculum. Through mapping out the ‘Golden Threads’ we can ensure that pupils are given lots of opportunities to perfect their skills, knowledge and understanding.

The Golden Threads of ‘Maths’ are:

  • Number
  • Geometry
  • Measurement
  • Statistics
