Computing

Subject Intent

The Computing curriculum at Whitehill Community Academy is delivered through weekly timetabled lessons. When designing the computing curriculum, the full national curriculum for computing was taken into consideration, ensuring that pupils are exposed to all of the aims and more.

Our computing curriculum is delivered through the Purple Mash scheme of work, the Computing curriculum’s creative units. This provides a wide range of different technological experiences using a variety of tools. Our curriculum embeds Computer Science, Digital Literacy and Information Technology embedding e-Safety to ensure safe and responsible use of technology. By following our bespoke and creative curriculum all pupils will reach their full academic potential. All children will meet or exceed national expectations by the end of their primary education.

At Whitehill Academy, we take our responsibility very seriously to support our children in becoming good local, national, and global citizens of the future, nurturing and modelling high expectations of care and respect for one another. Adapting and refining the Computing scheme of work to enhance learning throughout the academy promoting the responsibility respect and empathy for others.
The Computing curriculum promotes the essential core British values while encouraging all our children to be creative, unique, open-minded, and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and others within our academy. We promote the use of Scratch, CAD F1 in schools, LEGO, HTML and Python to assist in the next step of the Computing education.

Pupils’ cultural development involves pupils acquiring an understanding of cultural traditions and an ability to appreciate and respond to a variety of aesthetic experiences. They acquire a respect for their own culture and that of others, an interest in others’ ways of doing things and curiosity about differences. They develop the knowledge, skills, understanding, qualities, and attitudes they need to understand, appreciate, and contribute to culture.

Golden Threads

To enable our subject leaders to provide a robust approach to the Computing curriculum, knowledge and skills are structured so that each term and year build upon one another. This is done by mapping out the ‘Golden Threads’ of our computing curriculum. Through mapping out the ‘Golden Threads’ we can ensure that pupils are given lots of opportunities to perfect their skills, knowledge and understanding.

The Golden Threads of ‘Computing’ are:

  • Computer Science
  • Digital Literacy
  • Information Technology
  • E-Safety
